The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as Food Stamps, is a federal initiative designed to help low-income individuals and families afford nutritious food, thereby ensuring they maintain a healthy diet.

This program is managed by the United States Department of Agriculture at the national level, with Texas Health and Human Services handling state-specific requirements in Texas.

In Texas, eligible recipients of SNAP benefits get their funds monthly through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, locally known as the Lone Star Card. This card functions much like a typical debit or credit card.

It allows beneficiaries to purchase essential food items such as carbs, proteins, fruits, and vegetables, although it cannot be used to buy hot prepared foods, tobacco, alcohol, or non-food items, nor can it be used to pay bills.

Households with low income, as well as unemployed persons, can apply for SNAP. There are certain rules for individuals aged 18 to 52, who may face time limits on their benefits and are often required to seek employment. Pregnant women and those with disabilities do not face these restrictions.

Here's when specific groups can expect their benefits in the coming week of May:

  • May 19: SNAP EGD Numbers 65-67
  • May 20: SNAP EGD Numbers 68-71
  • May 21: SNAP EGD Numbers 72-74
  • May 22: SNAP EGD Numbers 75-78
  • May 23: SNAP EGD Numbers 79-81
  • May 24: SNAP EGD Numbers 82-85
  • May 25: SNAP EGD Numbers 86-88

Benefits are distributed between the 1st and the 28th of each month, based on the Eligibility Determination Group (EDG) number found on official SNAP documents.
